Up to 50 costumed dogs can parade through the Mill Valley Lumber Yard on Sunday, Oct. 25, competing for prizes in the fourth annual Howl-o-Ween Dog Costume Contest.

The Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center said Oct. 14 that registration spots remained open for the 10:30 a.m. event, but only the first 50 dogs to sign up can enter.

Here is how it works. Registered dogs walk on leash around the Lumber Yard grounds while spectators take in the costumes and cast votes through a special online link. The top 10 dogs advance to a final round of voting and receive awards, including a grand prize. Categories include Best DIY Costume, Best Owner + Pup Combo Costume, Funniest Costume and Most Clever Costume.

Residents without dogs are welcome. The chamber is asking spectators to show up, watch the parade and help pick the winner.

The Lumber Yard is owned by Matt and Jan Mathews, who have kept the 19th-century property rooted in its past. "We purchased the Lumber Yard to keep the buildings from being bulldozed," the couple said on the venue's website. The site now houses boutique shops, studios and restaurants at the foot of Mount Tamalpais.

Businesses are sponsoring prizes, according to the Lumber Yard's Facebook page. Sponsors include Tiburon Dog Butler, Dapper Dog Salon in Mill Valley, Brownie's Pet Boutique in Larkspur and Woodlands Pet Food & Treats in Tiburon.

Registration information is available through the venue's event page.
