Redwood High's boys water polo team buried San Rafael 17-2 on Tuesday, Oct. 13, scoring 10 goals before halftime in a lopsided Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) win.
Junior Storm Jackson opened the scoring and kept the pressure on through the first half, the Redwood Bark reported. The Giants led 13-2 after three quarters and held San Rafael scoreless the rest of the way.
The rout was on early.
Senior Eddie Poser said the team treated the game as preparation for bigger matchups ahead. Senior Max Lippiatt credited the dominant stretch to the team's practice habits.
"I think our work ethic in practice has paid off," Lippiatt told the Redwood Bark. "We are also looking forward to the future and our big games ahead."
Senior Dylan McDonald acknowledged the Giants still have room to grow. McDonald said the team could perform well for the rest of the season with continued practice.
The blowout followed Redwood's 19-10 win over rival Archie Williams on Oct. 8, a game in which Isaac Nikfar, Jakob Engberg and Poser each scored four goals, the Marin IJ reported. Jackson added two goals and three assists in that contest, while Chase Jackson contributed a goal and four assists. Goalkeeper William Mills recorded 13 saves. The Giants improved to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in MCAL play with that victory.
The Giants are chasing two prizes: the No. 1 MCAL seed and a strong showing at the North vs. South tournament, which runs Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17, at Sacred Heart Prep.
"We have two more league games left, so if we close out those we can get the No. 1 seed and hopefully go undefeated in MCALs this year," Poser told the Redwood Bark after Tuesday’s game.
Redwood followed the San Rafael victory with a 25-6 win over Marin Catholic on Wednesday, Oct. 14, improving to 7-0 in league play, according to the Marin IJ.
Earlier this season, head coach Rudy Kardos praised the group's chemistry. After the Sept. 7 home opener, an 11-9 win over Menlo School, Kardos called it "one of the closest teams we have had in the past 15 years," the Redwood Bark reported.
Redwood opens the North vs. South tournament Friday against The Bishop's School.
