A film about Tamarin Luchessa, a Marin-raised gymnast named for Mount Tamalpais, returns to the big screen Wednesday, Oct. 14, after a screening reportedly sold out at the Mill Valley Film Festival.

"This Bright Light," directed by former Marin resident Alexandra Lexton, screens at 6:45 p.m. at the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael. Tickets were listed at $15.75 to $17.75 by the Marin Independent Journal and are available, subject to availability, at cinema.cafilm.org. Lexton will attend the screening, according to the theater's listing.

The feature-length docudrama follows Luchessa's life and the bond between her and her mother, Cindy Reynolds, a Marin resident who served as executive producer. According to reporting by the Marin Independent Journal, Reynolds founded the Mill Valley business NeuroFit @ Jyzen after her daughter was diagnosed with a mild traumatic brain injury. Luchessa was a national champion in rhythmic gymnastics at age 12 and later studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She was also a hip-hop dancer.

Her first name combines "Mount Tamalpais" and "Marin."

A diabetes diagnosis as a teenager derailed her path toward the Olympics, according to a festival summary by Michelle Svenson. Medical crises followed, including a kidney and pancreas transplant that the festival summary describes as changing her personality in ways her family struggled to recognize. The summary says her family recognized her earlier personality again when the transplanted organs began to fail. She died at 42.

The film features vintage videos of Luchessa, reenactments performed by local actors and interviews with Reynolds, Luchessa's gymnastics coach and friends. Reynolds speaks with mediums in the film and details her daughter's struggles, as the Marin Independent Journal reported on Oct. 12.

"The message is universal, but it will really resonate with our community," Lexton told the Marin IJ on Oct. 12.

Lexton, who now lives on an apple farm in Sebastopol, said Mount Tamalpais serves as a backdrop throughout the film. "This Bright Light" is her fourth film shown at the Mill Valley Film Festival. She also wrote and sang the theme song, "Devotion," which she co-wrote with Reynolds and the Brothers Koren.

The docudrama made its world premiere Oct. 10 at the Lark Theatre in Larkspur as part of the 49th Mill Valley Film Festival, as the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Reynolds connected with Lexton through a mutual acquaintance and hired her to direct the project, according to the Marin IJ.
