Wes Fitzpatrick ripped the ball from a Menlo School running back and returned it roughly 50 yards for a touchdown in the final minute. The play gave Redwood High a 15-9 road win Saturday, Sept. 19, in Menlo Park, snapping Menlo's three-game home winning streak and dropping the Knights to 1-3, according to MaxPreps.
The Giants trailed 9-8 when Menlo got the ball late with a chance to run out the clock. Instead of grinding down the game, the Knights called a running play.
"They ran a little iso play," Redwood head coach Allen Talley told the Marin Independent Journal. "Instead of tackling him, (Fitzpatrick) just took the ball away from him."
Fitzpatrick, a senior who plays receiver and defensive end, has made plays on both sides of the ball this season. In Redwood's 41-21 rivalry win over Tamalpais on Sept. 10, he caught two touchdown passes, recorded three sacks and totaled 80 yards. After that game, he told the Marin IJ, "I like sacks and I like touchdowns … I can't decide which I like better."
Against Menlo, Fitzpatrick delivered on the defensive end.
Redwood's defense forced five turnovers on the afternoon. A Miles Bricker interception before halftime set up the Giants' first score, an 18-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Cash Ward to Finn Reilly.
Ward, a Marin Catholic transfer and team captain, opened the season with 235 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-14 win over San Leandro. He threw five touchdown passes in the Tam blowout. Against Menlo, his connection with Reilly provided the only offensive touchdown Redwood needed.
The Giants' defense held the Knights to nine points and delivered the game-winner when Fitzpatrick pounced on Menlo's late mistake.
Redwood improved to 3-1, its second straight win. The Giants open Redwood Empire Conference Valley Division play at home against Petaluma on Sept. 25 or Sept. 26.
