Mill Valley residents can sign up for a free five-session climate action workshop this fall that covers home energy savings, sustainable transportation, emergency preparedness and waste reduction.

Resilient Neighborhoods, a Marin County nonprofit founded in 2010 by executive director Tamra Peters, is running two virtual cohorts starting in September. A Thursday team begins Sept. 10 at 4:30 p.m., according to the organization's sign-up page, meeting every other week through Nov. 5. A Wednesday team starts Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. and runs through Nov. 11. Each session lasts 90 minutes.

The City of Mill Valley promoted the series on its official alerts page Tuesday, Aug. 4. Mill Valley is a government partner of Resilient Neighborhoods through the Marin Climate and Energy Partnership.

Participants calculate their household carbon footprint, build a personalized Climate Action Plan and choose from more than 100 actions to cut emissions. Topics span energy, transportation, food, shopping, water and waste. The series also addresses how to prepare for climate-related emergencies, a practical concern in a county prone to wildfire and flooding.

The program is open to anyone who lives or works in Marin County. Both renters and homeowners are welcome. Workshops are fully online, requiring only a computer with internet access. Advance registration is required at resilientneighborhoods.org.

Graduates receive a Certificate of Achievement, access to an online Climate Action Toolkit, information on rebates and incentives for home upgrades, and invitations to future community events.

As of a 2018 marketing document, Resilient Neighborhoods had helped nearly 1,000 Marin residents reduce 5 million pounds of carbon emissions. Current program totals were not available.
