A man with 10 outstanding warrants was arrested early Aug. 13 after a pursuit on Highway 101 near the Spencer Avenue exit sent deputies searching through a Sausalito neighborhood and prompted a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

A 34-year-old Ukiah man was found hiding in brush behind homes on Santa Rosa Avenue after a roughly four-hour sequence that began when a Marin County Sheriff's deputy spotted a vehicle speeding on southbound Highway 101 at about 2 a.m., according to the Marin IJ, citing sheriff's Lt. Brennan Collins.

When the deputy tried to stop the vehicle, the driver made a U-turn into the northbound lanes. Deputies found the vehicle abandoned nearby shortly after.

The trail went cold.

Then, at about 6:15 a.m., the Sheriff's Office received a report of a pedestrian walking onto northbound Highway 101 in the same area. The pedestrian ran from deputies into the residential neighborhood near the Spencer Avenue exit, Collins told the Marin IJ.

Authorities issued a shelter-in-place notice for the neighborhood while they searched.

Deputies located the man hiding in brush behind residences on Santa Rosa Avenue. He was arrested on suspicion of evading a peace officer, reckless driving, obstructing officers and disorderly conduct.

He was also booked on the 10 outstanding warrants, which span multiple jurisdictions including San Francisco, San Jose and Clearlake. The warrants involve allegations of drug crimes, firearms offenses, robbery, false imprisonment, burglary and conspiracy.

The Spencer Avenue exit sits on the stretch of Highway 101 used daily by Southern Marin commuters traveling between Marin County and San Francisco. The Sheriff's Office has not announced an arraignment date or provided additional details about the vehicle involved.
