Larkspur residents face a packed stretch of community events over the next five weeks, with a climate forum, a giant book sale, the annual wine stroll and the return of a century-old dance tradition all on the calendar through Sept. 19.

City Manager Dan Schwarz outlined the lineup in the city's Aug. 14 newsletter, starting with two back-to-back civic dates this week.

Climate forum and council meeting

The Larkspur Climate Action Forum meets Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Larkspur Library, 10 Rose Lane. Community Development Director Andrew Mogensen will present on CALGreen Building Standards and the city's Flex Path Program, which the City Council will take up Wednesday, Aug. 19. The forum also covers EV charging outreach for property owners. Residents can attend in person (east entrance) or via Zoom; written comments go to [email protected] by 5 p.m. that day.

The City Council meets Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 400 Magnolia Ave. Among the agenda items: reviewing applications for the newly formed City Hall Study Citizens' Committee, a group tasked with developing a rehabilitation plan for the historic City Hall building. Applications closed Aug. 7. Mayor Stephanie Andre described the committee at an April Larkspur Community Foundation meeting, saying the city sought "locals with architectural, real estate, finance, legal and historic preservation backgrounds to help research and advise on this decision."

Giant Used Book Sale on Aug. 23

The Friends of Larkspur Library host a Giant Used Book Sale on Sunday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the library's community room at 10 Rose Lane. The inventory comes from the former library's collection: best sellers, children's books, mysteries, classics, cookbooks and art books. Early access runs 9 to 10 a.m. for a $20 donation; general admission is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; everything goes half-price from 2 to 3 p.m. Cash and credit cards accepted.

Wine Stroll returns to Magnolia Avenue on Aug. 29

The 14th Annual Downtown Larkspur Wine Stroll takes over Magnolia Avenue on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event features tastings from local wineries, food from area restaurants and a chance to browse downtown shops. All ages are welcome; wine tasting requires valid ID and a minimum age of 21. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.

NFL Flag Football at Piper Park

Registration is open for Marin NFL Flag Football, a non-contact league for boys and girls ages 6 to 14. Games run Sundays from Sept. 13 through Oct. 25 at Piper Park, 250 Doherty Drive, between 1 and 6 p.m. Players receive official NFL Flag jerseys. Sign up at larkspur.recdesk.com.

Rose Bowl Dance on Sept. 19

The Larkspur Community Foundation's Rose Bowl Dance returns Saturday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the historic Escalle Winery on Magnolia Avenue. Tickets are $195 per person and include live music by Tainted Love, food, drinks and dancing inside the red Limerick Inn building on the 29-acre property owned by Mary Tiscornia. A complimentary trolley will shuttle guests; no parking is available at the venue.

The dance revives a tradition that began in 1912, when the volunteer fire department held fundraisers beneath redwoods on Cane Street, according to the Larkspur Community Foundation. Those dances ran for five decades before ending in 1963. Proceeds from this year's event support foundation projects including Arch Street Landing, a proposed native garden and public retreat on Magnolia Avenue with an estimated cost of $250,000.
