Marin County school districts participating in a new three-part training series will work toward board-ready artificial intelligence policies and student acceptable-use guidelines during the 2026-27 school year.
The Marin County Office of Education announced Thursday, Sept. 24, a three-part Countywide AI Policy Development and Adoption Series to help districts write AI rules, set boundaries for student use and build plans for rolling those policies out to families and school boards. MCOE has partnered with Edapt, a California ed-tech firm founded in 2023 that says it has trained more than 3,000 educators.
Over three in-person sessions, participating teams will draft custom AI policies tailored to each district, write staff and student acceptable-use guidelines, and build rollout strategies for communicating those policies to boards and families. Between sessions, district leaders get virtual office hours for troubleshooting and preparing board presentations.
Each district can send multiple leaders. Eligible roles include superintendents, technology directors, curriculum directors and principals.
"Our goal is not to create a one-size-fits-all approach, but to support each district in developing and sustaining policies and practices that reflect its own needs, priorities, and local context," Marin County Superintendent of Schools John A. Carroll said in the announcement.
The series follows new state guidance on AI in schools. The California Department of Education released AI guidance on Jan. 9 and posted a model AI policy on June 25, both developed under Senate Bill 1288. The state describes the materials as nonmandatory and encourages districts to adapt policies to their local needs. Separately, AB 2876 directs California to incorporate AI literacy into certain curriculum frameworks when they are next revised.
According to Edapt's website, 70 percent of school systems nationally still lack an AI policy.
MCOE is also starting an internal initiative called "AI for MCOE," a yearlong monthly training series for its own employees at all experience levels.
Session dates, locations and registration deadlines for the countywide series have not been announced.
