Homeowners curious about ditching their gas furnace or water heater can walk through real electrified homes, but they need to sign up by Saturday, Aug. 15, to get the addresses.

The fifth annual Marin Green@Home Tour, a free, self-guided event on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will open several homes across the county for visitors to inspect heat pumps, induction cooktops, solar panels, battery storage and other upgrades in person. The county's Climate and Sustainability Office is organizing the tour with Bay Area nonprofit Acterra, whose staff includes beneficial electrification manager Irvin Rivero.

Participating home addresses will be sent to registered attendees on Aug. 15 via Eventbrite. Registration must be completed before then.

The format is peer-to-peer. Homeowners who made the switch will be on hand to answer questions about what they spent, which contractors they hired, how installation went and what rebates or tax credits they used. The county said the goal is to spark conversations between neighbors about steps they can take to move away from fossil fuels and toward more resilient homes.

The tour comes as Marin County tallies 1,524 gas appliances replaced with electric alternatives over the seven-year life of its Electrify Marin rebate program. Heat pump water heaters have driven much of that growth, according to the Climate and Sustainability Office. Buildings account for roughly one-third of the county's greenhouse gas emissions.

The event started as a virtual tour and ran online for its first three years, drawing hundreds of viewers. This marks the second year homes have opened their doors in person.

Marin Clean Energy, Marin Water and Resilient Neighborhoods are sponsoring the tour. Acterra is also seeking volunteers for registration check-in and public education; a sign-up form is linked from the county's news release.
