Mill Valley's century-old municipal golf course is adding a new event to its summer calendar: the inaugural Mill Valley City Junior Championship, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, at the 9-hole course tucked into the redwoods at the base of Mount Tamalpais.

The tournament is open to players 18 and under, with four flights. Entry fees range from $30 to $40 per player depending on flight, with lunch included alongside trophies and prizes for top finishers. Registration is available at millvalleyjunior.org, which links to the course's ClubCaddie booking system.

The junior championship joins a busy 2026 season for the Mill Valley Golf Club, the member organization that plays at the public course. The club's tournament results show a Players Championship held March 7, an MVGC Masters on April 4 and a Member-Member Tournament that drew 64 players across 32 teams. The Member-Member gross title went to the team of Cushner and Mackay with a score of 30. The Masters produced a three-way tie at 33 among Aaron Levin, Alex Cushner and Aaron Peter Noerr.

A $25 round under the redwoods

Founded in 1919 as the Mill Valley Country Club, the course became city-owned in 1939 after voters approved a bond to purchase it. Today it operates as a fully public facility through Mill Valley Recreation.

New green fees took effect July 1. Mill Valley residents pay $25 for a weekday round and $27 on weekends. Non-residents pay $31 weekday and $34 on weekends. Juniors and seniors get discounted rates, and members of the NCGA-sponsored Youth on Course program play weekdays for just $5.

The 42-acre layout plays 2,140 yards across hills, creeks and mature redwoods. Its signature challenge is hole No. 4, a 365-yard par 4 that the Mill Valley Golf Club describes as "one of the hardest par fours under 400 yards you may ever play." Walking off the green delivers an unobstructed view of Mt. Tam.

For newer players, the course introduced a par-3 short course in 2010, built within the existing layout with its own NCGA-lasered scorecard. Teaching professional Paul Rojas offers private lessons for juniors and adults through the pro shop at (415) 388-9982.

The course welcomes dogs on the fairways. One reviewer on GolfPass, where the course holds a 4.4-star rating across 415 reviews, called it a "relaxed dog-friendly family 9er" after playing July 30.

How to play
