Mill Valley is warning residents about fraudulent emails targeting customers of the city's Planning and Building Department.
The city posted a public notice on Tuesday, Sept. 8, alerting permit holders and others who do business with the department that scam emails may request payments, financial details or personal information. The messages may include links or attachments that mimic official city communications, according to the notice.
The city said anyone who receives a suspicious email should not click links, open attachments, share personal or financial information, or send money. Residents should verify any request directly with the Planning and Building Department using contact information from the city's official website.
The alert follows a separate warning Mill Valley police issued in July 2026 about phone scams. In those cases, callers posed as police officers or sheriff's deputies and pressured victims to hand over money or gift cards, according to Patch. Police reminded residents that law enforcement will never call to demand payment.
The city urged anyone who has received a suspicious email related to Planning and Building services to report it.
Suspected scams can be reported to the Planning and Building Department at 415-388-4033 or to the Mill Valley Police Department at 415-389-4100 or [email protected].
