The Marin County District Attorney's Office has formally indicted a Mill Valley youth basketball coach on three felony counts of lewd acts with a child, adding a special allegation that he held a position of trust over the victim.

Charles Ramon Huff, 57, faces the charges after his arrest on July 26 in Santa Rosa, according to the Novato Police Department and the DA's office. Court documents identify the victim as a 14- or 15-year-old girl.

The documents allege the abuse occurred from October 2025 through May 2026. Novato Police Lt. Sophia Winter said the alleged crime took place in May and declined to provide further details, the Marin Independent Journal reported.

Huff was booked into the Marin County Jail. Bail was set at $250,000. He was booked on suspicion of kidnapping, sexual battery and lewd acts with a child. The DA's formal indictment narrowed the charges to three counts of lewd acts, with the added position-of-trust enhancement.

Novato Police Sgt. Wes Carroll said the investigation began after a teenage girl contacted authorities.

"We worked with the victim, the family, and, with some investigative techniques, we were able to identify Mr. Huff as a suspect in this case," Carroll told ABC7.

Police said the alleged abuse did not occur at an official facility, court, or field where organized sports take place. Carroll said the allegations are not directly tied to Huff's coaching activities.

The North Bay Basketball Academy confirmed that Huff coached for the organization and placed him on indefinite administrative leave. In a statement, the academy said the incident did not involve a participant in its program and that it had reached out to investigating authorities to offer assistance.

Novato police indicated there may be additional victims and urged parents whose children interacted with Huff to contact the department at 415-897-4361, referencing Case #NP26-1333.

Huff is scheduled to appear in Marin County court Thursday, July 30, to enter a plea.
