Playa, the modern Mexican restaurant at 41 Throckmorton Ave. in downtown Mill Valley, marks 10 years in business with a week-long celebration running Tuesday, Sept. 15, through Sunday, Sept. 20.
The anniversary week features $10 Playa Margaritas and $10 tostadas served all day, along with a new dish from Chef Michael Siegel: Cochinita Pibil, a slow-roasted pork marinated in achiote and citrus and wrapped in banana leaves. The restaurant's announcement calls it "a Playa take on the Yucatán classic."
Two tostada options are available. Diners can choose between Shrimp Aguachile Negro with black citrus marinade and serrano chile, or Roasted Red & Gold Beets with serrano vinaigrette and cashew crema.
Playa opened in 2016 and earned a three-star review from the San Francisco Chronicle, which named it one of the Bay Area's top 10 new restaurants that year, according to the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Michelin Guide awarded Playa its Bib Gourmand designation in 2024. Only four other Marin restaurants hold that distinction, according to the chamber.
The restaurant is part of the Real Restaurants group, which also operates Buckeye Roadhouse, Bar Bocce and Bungalow 44. Siegel, a Tucson native who cooked at Betelnut, Bix and Shorty Goldstein's Jewish Deli in San Francisco, runs both Playa and nearby Corner Bar.
In December 2024, Siegel launched Playa's first new menu since the restaurant opened, organized around four sections: Antojitos, Mariscos, Platos Fuertes and Masa. "We are excited to expand our offerings to include interesting and lesser-known Latin American flavors," Siegel said at the time, according to the chamber.
The Michelin Guide highlighted Playa's queso fundido, mushroom quesadilla and pastor tacos, according to Marin Magazine. The Marin Dish has called Playa one of Marin's standout dining spots.
The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday. Anniversary specials run all day during regular service, Sept. 15–20. Full hours and reservations are available at playamv.com or by calling (415) 384-8871.
