Redwood's girls flag football team crushed Marin Catholic 32-6 on Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the first game played under the new "golden flag rivalry" banner.

Quarterback Annaliese Pyle threw most of the Giants' touchdowns and added multiple rushing plays in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) matchup, the Redwood Bark reported. Head coach Michael Zlatoper called her the player of the game.

"If you're asking me who the player of the game was, it's definitely Annaliese … She's absolutely phenomenal on offense and defense," Zlatoper said.

Redwood struck early. Freshman Caroline Hopkins hauled in a first-quarter touchdown, and the Giants converted the extra point to go up 7-0. Pyle then connected with sophomore Rawlings Skelton for a second-quarter score, pushing the lead to 13-0.

Senior Rayne Meyers anchored the defense with tackles and interceptions that kept the Wildcats off the board. Meyers also scored in the third quarter to make it 20-0. Sophomore Samantha Voiles added the Giants' final touchdown.

Marin Catholic managed its lone score in the fourth quarter.

The win continued a strong stretch for Redwood's top players. In a 12-6 victory over Northgate on Sept. 8, Pyle passed for 153 yards and two touchdowns while Meyers recorded 10 solo tackles, according to the Marin Independent Journal.

In a Sept. 14 Redwood Bark profile, Zlatoper said winning MCAL was the team's goal and noted this is Redwood's first year competing in Division I of the North Coast Section (NCS).

Team captain Riya Pyle said the rivalry carried extra weight for both squads.

"We were really excited because they are one of our rivals for every single sport … We're both relatively new to the sport and I think we just had a big competitive feeling going into that game since we knew their players were almost as experienced as ours," Pyle said.

Redwood's next MCAL game is Monday, Sept. 21, per the MCAL schedule. The MCAL playoffs begin Thursday, Oct. 15, with the championship set for Wednesday, Oct. 21 at the highest seed, according to the MCAL playoffs schedule.
