Redwood High hosts Tamalpais High in the schools' annual football rivalry game Thursday, Sept. 10, in Larkspur, with both teams looking to shake off early-season losses.

Redwood (1-1) enters the matchup after a 21-14 non-league loss to Twelve Bridges on Friday, Sept. 4 in Lincoln, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The Giants opened the season with a 23-14 win over San Leandro on Aug. 29, a game in which senior quarterback Cash Ward completed 14 of 25 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

Tam (0-2) is still searching for its first win.

The Red-tailed Hawks fell 40-7 to Vintage on Sept. 6, with backup quarterback Carter Griffin making his first varsity start in place of Henry Tuttle, who left the previous week's game in the second quarter with an injury. Streeter Holt provided Tam's lone highlight, returning a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

The game is listed on the Patch community calendar for 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Redwood High, 395 Doherty Dr.

Redwood head coach Allen Talley's Giants showed fight in the Twelve Bridges loss. Finn Reilly caught a short pass from Ward at midfield and raced 65 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 7-7, though Twelve Bridges answered before the break to lead 14-7 at halftime. Wes Fitzpatrick hauled in a touchdown pass from Ward to cut the deficit to 21-14 in the fourth quarter. The comeback fell short.

In the season opener against San Leandro, Ward connected with senior Charlie Anderson for six catches, 87 yards and a touchdown, while junior Miles Bricker added a rushing score. Redwood won the North Coast Section (NCS) Division I championship last season, according to the Marin IJ's Sept. 7 Preps of the Week.

"We just need to build off of this game and fix some mental mistakes on both sides … but carry over the toughness we played with," Ward told the Redwood Bark after the San Leandro win on Aug. 30.

Tam head coach James Holan's squad faces a different set of questions. Tuttle's status for the rivalry game remains unclear from available reports, meaning Griffin could get the start again.

The Marin IJ noted in an Aug. 26 season preview that former MCAL rivalries remain strong even as the football landscape shifts, with Tam and San Rafael having changed divisions to join the Redwood Empire Conference.
