The Belvedere-Tiburon Library will host three free workshops starting Sept. 30 to help residents prepare for a potentially record-breaking El Niño storm season.
The series, titled "Get Ready for Super El Niño," brings representatives from the Belvedere Tiburon Office of Emergency Services, Public Works and local preparedness agencies to the library at 1501 Tiburon Blvd., according to the City of Belvedere's event listing. Sessions cover king tides, flooding, power outages and steps residents can take to protect their homes, according to the library's event page.
The three sessions are scheduled at different days and times:
- Wednesday, Sept. 30, 11 a.m. to noon
- Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1 to 2 p.m.
- Tuesday, Oct. 27, 6 to 7 p.m.
Registration is required. Residents can sign up through the library's event page or call (415) 789-2665.
The workshops come as Tiburon ramps up storm spending. The Town Council voted 3-0 on Sept. 2 to approve a $75,000 budget amendment for emergency supplies including temporary flood barriers, a towable trash pump, a portable light tower and sandbags, the Marin Independent Journal reported.
"None of this stuff is perishable, so even if we don't use it this year, we'll have it," Councilmember Jack Ryan said at the Sept. 2 council meeting, the Marin Independent Journal reported.
NOAA reports a greater than 90% chance El Niño will become very strong during fall and winter 2026–27, according to the Southern Marin Fire District. There is a 69% chance the October-through-December period could exceed the strength of every El Niño event since 1950.
Southern Marin Fire District said the region could face heavy rain, debris flows, high winds, downed trees and power outages. The district is coordinating preparations with local towns and Marin County.
Greenwood Cove Drive in Tiburon is among the locations the Marin County Flood Control District identifies as historically vulnerable to king tide flooding.
As we reported Sept. 22, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared an El Niño emergency to speed flood-related permits across the state, including in Marin.
