The Tiburon Police Department fielded 851 calls for service in July, up from 760 in May and 728 in April, according to monthly statistics the department posted Monday, Aug. 24.

The town also recorded zero thefts from vehicles in July, matching the totals reported in April and May. June statistics were not available.

Officers made four DUI arrests during the month, double the two recorded in May and up from zero in April. The department ran a DUI checkpoint on July 24, funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing where impaired-driving crashes have occurred, the department said.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Captain Jarrod Yee said in a July 23 press release announcing the checkpoint. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety."

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI in California face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license, according to the department.

Beyond DUI enforcement, July's numbers included 44 reports filed, 30 traffic citations issued, five total arrests and three traffic collisions. May saw 42 reports, 31 citations, six arrests and four collisions; April had 38 reports, 27 citations, four arrests and three collisions.

Traffic citations dipped slightly from 31 in May to 30 in July, while reports filed rose from 42 to 44.

Residents who witness suspicious activity or impaired driving can dial 911 in an emergency or contact the Tiburon Police Department for non-emergency reports. The department's next monthly statistics release, covering August, has not yet been scheduled.
