Tiburon Police will set up a DUI checkpoint on Friday, July 24, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. at an undisclosed location in town.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties plus a suspended license, according to the department.

The checkpoint location was chosen based on data showing where impaired-driving crashes have occurred, the Town of Tiburon said in an announcement posted July 23.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Captain Jarrod Yee said. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety."

The department noted that impairment from prescription drugs or marijuana carries the same legal consequences as alcohol. While recreational and medicinal marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence remains illegal regardless of the substance.

The checkpoint is part of a recurring enforcement effort funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Tiburon Police ran a similar DUI patrol on June 19 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. under the same grant program. In a June 17 announcement for that operation, Yee called impaired driving "a choice" and urged anyone who has been drinking or using impairing drugs to find a sober driver or alternate transportation.

The countywide push goes beyond patrol. The Marin County District Attorney's Office received a separate $445,000 OTS grant funding a two-person DUI prosecution team through September 30, 2026.

Locally, Tiburon Police recorded two DUI arrests in May 2026 out of 760 total calls for service, four traffic collisions, and six total arrests that month, according to department statistics posted June 29.
