Runners will take over Old Mill Park on two weekends this summer after Mill Valley's Parks and Recreation Commission placed use requests for the Double Dipsea and the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon's Dipsea Race portion on its consent calendar for approval at the Wednesday, Aug. 5 meeting, according to the commission's agenda.

Brazen Racing's 56th Double Dipsea will use the park as a first aid station and turnaround point on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 to 11 a.m. According to Brazen Racing, the 13.7-mile race runs entirely on the Dipsea Trail from Stinson Beach to Mill Valley and back, with Old Mill Park marking the midpoint at mile 6.85. Registration is closed. The race reached capacity.

The Dolphin Swimming & Boating Club's Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Dipsea Race portion will set up its start and finish line in the park's Redwood Grove on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The San Francisco-based club organizes the triathlon, and the Dipsea run leg brings competitors through downtown Mill Valley.

Both items were listed as routine consent calendar business, recommended for approval with staff conditions. Commission Chair Naomi Gray presided over the meeting at City Hall, 26 Corte Madera Ave.

The Double Dipsea dates to 1970, when San Francisco runner Walt Stack organized the first edition. Brazen Racing has managed the event since 2013. The race uses a handicap system with staggered wave starts, welcoming runners of all ages and speeds across the course that traverses Mount Tamalpais on the Dipsea Trail, one of the oldest cross-country running routes in the United States.

As we reported Aug. 6, the same commission meeting also addressed the Hauke Park softball renovation, field allocation policy and Boyle Park tennis operator search.

Old Mill Park stays busy into the fall. The 69th Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival returns to the park on Saturday and Saturday, Sept. 19–20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
