The Central Marin Police Authority will set up a sobriety and license checkpoint in Larkspur on Friday, Sept. 11, the agency's second such operation in less than a month.

The checkpoint is scheduled to run from about 6 p.m. to about 1 a.m., according to a Central Marin Police Authority alert. The exact location has not been disclosed. Officers will screen drivers for signs of intoxication and verify licenses.

The operation is funded by state and federal grant programs. The agency selects checkpoint sites based on data about impaired-driving crashes and arrests.

CMPA ran a similar checkpoint in San Anselmo on Aug. 14. Ahead of that operation, Sgt. Jeff Peterson said impaired drivers "put others on the road at significant risk," as Patch reported. The checkpoint will also screen for impairment from cannabis and medications, not just alcohol, according to the agency.

A first-time DUI conviction can cost an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and result in a suspended license, according to CMPA.

Drivers passing through Larkspur on the evening of Sept. 11 should expect possible delays.
